Hi, everyone! Welcome to Bug Talk. I’m
your host Ryan Haynes and I am here to
tell you what you need to know about
pest control during the holiday season.
The holiday’s are just around the corner.
Families will be traveling and getting
together to celebrate. This is a very
busy time of year for most people as
they create their must do holiday lists.
Topping many lists this season will be
decorating, baking, shopping and
parties. One thing that may not be on
your list but should be, is pest control for
your home.
In our home, we have many holiday
traditions we do each year with our
family. One activity our kids enjoy most
is making homemade Christmas
cookies. The cookie dough is made from
scratch and their favorite part is to
sample the dough when it comes out of
the mixer. Soon after the kids will roll out
the dough and use all sorts of cookie
cutters to create their favorite shapes.
After baking and cooling the final step is
to decorate. Icing and sprinkles put
these holiday treats over the top.
With so much care creating Christmas
cookies, the last thing we want is for
pests to be enjoying these delicious
baked treats. Ants are more likely to
make an appearance around the holiday
season. These tiny pests can be a
nuisance. Delicious treats of cookies,
candy and pies can draw ants inside
your home. There are several types of
ants that may enter your home. Some
ant varieties include Argentine,
Pharaoh, Little Black Ants, Ghost or
Sugar ants.
These little invaders can cause a lot of
stress for homeowners trying to enjoy
the season. The good news is there are
a few things you can do to make your
home less enticing to ants. Be sure to
seal entry points such as tiny cracks.
Check around windows, doors and
baseboards for any areas that may need
to be addressed. Keep food in sealed
containers or in the fridge. This will help
deter these pesky ants. Make sure to
clean areas regularly to avoid any
crumbs that may attract ants.
Another holiday invader can be
cockroaches. All of the activities and
decorating during the holiday season
can increase the chances of seeing
roaches appear or even a possible
infestation. Common roaches a
homeowner may see include American,
Oriental, Brown-Banded and German.
Seeing any roach during this festive
season can be upsetting.
Some roaches can be very difficult to
control. If a German roach infestation
occurs it will require the help of a pest
control specialist. Getting rid of German
roaches requires specialized treatments
and can take time for the problem to be
resolved.
What can you do to prevent a cockroach
infestation to your home? First, make
sure to inspect and clean any holiday
decorations you are placing around your
home. As decorations are often stored
in dark places like attics, they are a
great place for cockroaches to harbor.
Be sure to keep your kitchen and other
areas of your home clean and food
stored in proper containers. Taking out
the trash regularly will also decrease
your risk of cockroach infestations.
The final thing you can do is to know the
signs of roach activity. Be on the lookout
for small dark specks around food
storage areas that could be roach
droppings. Egg casings may appear in
boxes or containers where decorations
are stored. Cockroaches shed their
exoskeletons as they grow too. If you
notice a foul odor that smells musty
along with any other signs listed above
then it’s time to call a professional.
If you are seeing evidence of ants or
cockroaches be sure to contact a pest
control specialist. Thanks for joining us
today. We will see you next time.
Remember, if it crawls or fly’s, we’re
